A short month after Seoul, here I am now leaving for Indonesia, specifically on the island of Java, and more specifically in Ujung Genteng, a small town 6h located south of Jakarta. The information available on the Lonely Planet and the Internet are pretty slim. These are the only pictures of white sandy beaches, the prospect of reviewing the turtles lay their eggs on the beach and try a little bit of fishing, which led to Alexander, Greg and myself to try.
Jetstarasia ticket in hand, we depart at 21.15 Singapore and arrive in Jakarta at 21.40 after 1:30 flight. Time to pay the visa (U.S. $ 10 for less than 7 days for U.S. $ 25 more), retrieve the luggage (fishing rods required) 22h and it is time to find a means of transportation. As usual, a dozen Indonesians crowded around us, a driver and 9 traders / observers. We did not really reference price, which is more difficult to start a negotiation. We only know that the Ocean Queen Resort Rp 850.000 invoice its customers for a ride Pelabuhan Ratu Jakarta which is 2 hours north of Ujung Genteng. On one side, the hotel must be a margin, the other route is longer, therefore it is expected to be in the same price range. Call price given by our partner: 1,400,000 Rp ... we faked the heart attack. The second proposal is to Rp 1,200,000 He is invited to find American tourists are generally not looking at prices, but tourists are not lining up at the door so the negotiation continues. We fix the maximum price at Rp 900.000 Here are our partners who are dizzy .. it was concluded that Rp 950.000 (us) seems like a good price.
5 minutes of waiting we amount in a small Toyota 4x4 with two drivers who speak English quite well. Right out of the airport, are congestion ahead. 1:30 After bottling, the car turned around and borrows to pay another way. It runs much better.

closer you get to our goal, over the road is rough. 1:30 We get lost before finding Ujung Genteng. It is about 5:30 and the day is already beginning to rise. Ujung Genteng
bears no resemblance to what we had imagined. Experienced surfers, we envisioned a village with a main street in which guesthouses, bars and restaurants are overlapped, it is not. Once the village gate and crossed a few houses, we continue to see 10 minutes before other houses. It continues a bit before coming to the Mama's and Papa's Guesthouse. We moved to a small house unsafe for Rp 300.000 Rp 150.000 or so per person with lunch included. We decide to roll over 4km away. Interest 4x4 is felt when we cross small streams and rugged bridge. Just before the bridge accident, left a path takes us toward the Losmen
Cowboy held by Mr Pak Hayun. He speaks very little English but the rooms are not too bad and with a lovely view of the of Pangumbahan beach where turtles come to nest. Rp 150.000 per person for two rooms, meals included.

Besides, we arrive at a time when Indonesian install a fence
to either define or prohibit access in the area. Ban would be useless since you can circumvent the fence by the sea is now time to pay our drivers. Since they were nice, they have a lot of running (8 instead of 6 am) and they speak good English, we decided to pay Rp 1 million instead of Rp 950.000 (yes we know to be generous too!:) ). They try to obtain additional Rp 100.000. Not a chance, we did not spend 10 minutes to negotiate almost back to original price.
A small morning walk on the beach allows to assess the force of the waves in this part of Indonesia. A few rolls, but most waves break almost self-contained with power, they seem hardly surfable, but not practicing, I will not judge.
It's time for breakfast and 6 pancakes per person with a can of chocolate
liquid. We then decided to go swim. The waves are indeed very strong and it quickly becomes dangerous to depart too far from the beach because the ebb carries us off. Little sun too, but the weather is pretty fast.
We return to the guesthouse. We are trying now to establish contact with Pak. After 5 minutes of mime, he understands that I want to put bait at the end of the hook. After 30 seconds of discussion, I understand that I must find "Ountang" without knowing what it is. One youth guesthouse took me on a motorbike. 2 small shops later, I got back to
main village where the auction goes to fish every morning from 5am to 9am. The "utan" turn out to be prawns. I buy 2 for about Rp 25.000. Back at the guesthouse, we eat a good breakfast of fish, vegetables and rice and mango dessert pout. I'm a little nap while Alex Gregory and go around the neighborhood. Behind the guesthouse, some paddy fields, villagers in the fields, ..
We then try a little fishing with shrimp purchased previously. The sea is always raging
, the tip of the rod bends every 5 seconds, hard to see the keys. Packets of seaweed clinging to the line, then what are the logs of the fence, the Indonesian built this morning that we recover. After half an hour and both lines break, the party is over fishing. Back at the guesthouse, dinner awaits us this afternoon that same meal but with small potatoes as a bonus. Around beers, we negotiate the car Cibodas. The activities seem a bit limited, so we decide not to stay 3 days in Ujung Genteng. The English of our host is limited, it has called in reinforcements one of his friends. He speaks pretty good English. He calls another friend who has a car. He asked for Rp 1 million to take us to Cibodas seems to be 4 hours drive from Ujung Genteng. After 10 minutes negotiating the final offer will be Rp 700.000 Not much choice, the villagers do not seem to have many cars. Once the secure transport of tomorrow, we go hunt for the overarching goal: the turtles.
Leaving the guesthouse right, then 200 meters straight ahead, we see thirty
of headlights split the darkness of the night. Armed with flashlights, we join the main road carrying such mopeds. We turn left and follow the stream. 10 minutes later and we arrive at the office rangers that manage access to the spawning area (which is none other than beach where we were fishing). Rp 10.000 per person for access. On the beach, we find our riders, the lights are off. A few yards away, a turtle to start digging a hole. Having already attended the show during my weekend
Turtle Islands (Borneo), I already know what should and should not do. The Indonesians have a different approach, some stroking the tortoise, others raise sand in the hole.

During this time, I light behind the turtle to facilitate
photos for my two companions. I also m'essaye the picture, but at night, with a very low light, the mission is rather difficult. Probably annoyed, the turtle leaves without laying. As she returns to the sea , the Indonesian chain the shootings at her side. I'm just putting the flash and shoot. Once the turtle retort, we decide to remove the group. We remain half an hour sitting on a rock on the beach. The chance to go see a turtle on our perimeter, which is growing more dark, being small, we decided to return to the guesthouse for a nap.

As expected, the car picks us up at 6am. While the driver is polishing his car, we enjoy our last chocolate pancakes. They are this time with mango and are much worse than the kinds of pancakes the day before. Then we settle the bill: Rp 510.000 for two bedrooms, 4 meals, 2 beers, 3 bottles of water. It is 7:30 when we leave.
The drive went fairly well until the arrival of Bogor south and a huge traffic jam. We arrive at 13h to Cibodas. Our driver wants to sleep there and get us back on tomorrow Jakarta Rp 700.000 I wait in the car while Alex and Gregory will see the Houses of Freddy's Homestay and talk about transportation for the next day. It was decided to separate from our driver who does not speak English too. Rooms are Rp 100.000 and the corridor is a bit like a corridor train with these sliding doors. We then descend into the small dining room to take our lunch. The service is rather long (40 minutes!). Meanwhile, we read travelogues
backpackeurs others who passed through here. Some reviews describe our host to be too sticky for now it is not. We are doing our part in Freddy wanted to climb the volcano Gede at 2am. His English is not too bad but not exceptional either. It understands that we need to apply for a permit for cascade and does not mean we want to go to the top .. but we do not really know why. Menu can we finish and we started for the garden
botany, called Kebun Raya. The weather is not great. We pass by before Information Center to buy our permits for the trek tomorrow. The opening hours are from 8:30 to 14:30, it is too late. We will see later how we can do.

informed of our visit did not yield information center (he knew that the center would close at 2:30 but we were never told what #^(*!, Freddy brought his son Indra. Bilingual, English accent, Indra before us. Indra mainly organizes treks to see the birds. He will try to obtain for us guidance and permits for the night. The guide costs Rp 450.000 Rp 22.000 The license costs, but it must also photocopies of our passports . The nearest photocopier is on the main road Cibodas, 4km from Freddy's Homestay. It therefore takes a bémo drives (small yellow bus) to the guesthouse and headed towards the main road (Patak Prat). The trip cost us Rp 8.000 for 3. To the right of the junction, the copy center .. 500Rp for 3 copies and so we headed back to the guesthouse. It provides photocopies and 100,000 Rp to Indra and hopefully ... 30 minutes later and the penalty falls, no license. Rather strange for a country where nothing is really square. Indra does not come with us because if something happens, there could be problems. We must wait 6.30am to buy a license for the waterfall and continue to rise as we can (it would take 8.30 for the permit for the summit which costs Rp 22.000). The problem we have is the lack of time. Congestion of the way (near Bokor and near the airport) we encourage caution. We therefore organized the departure to Jakarta the following day at 14h or 7 am before our flight. Breakfast Nasi goreng for dinner and we're in bed by 21:30.
Monday, October 27
Sunrise at 6am. Breakfast with coffee and banana pancakes and we are on our way to the volcano. We cross the market, go right before the Botanical Garden to arrive at a small desk . The teller was not there, we continue our journey.
The first part of the trekking trail is somewhat rocky stairs rapidly evolving in the ground. After 40 minutes, we arrive at blue lake. A few photos later and we resumed our march. We arrive at a crossroads, right is the waterfall, straight a little on the left is the ascent of the volcano. We start straight.
Twenty minutes later, we saw some monkeys . A cons day, the monkeys are difficult to identify but seem like Kiki in our childhood.
We continue to climb. We reach the last refuge before the summit of the volcano Gede, Kandang Badak. We're only an hour from the summit but we must begin to come down (allow three hours).
It comes down to the crossroads and turn left to go see the waterfalls. 10 short minutes later and here we are in front of 3 small waterfalls . One would ask a
ten minutes (most actually, but we will not blame Gregory longer) before returning to the guesthouse. We asked Freddy to prepare lunch for 13h. We arrive at 13:30, lunch is not ready. You take a shower and then a final Nasi Goreng and we're off to 14.30. Instead of traffic jams, it's a smooth ride ahead of us and it was 2:30 we reach the airport in Jakarta. We have to wait 4 hours. The first feeling is to say that we have had time to go to the top of the volcano, but with "if", my aunt ...
It arises first at McDonald's. Gregory then left for 90 minutes of reflexology somewhat suspect ... We find ourselves then for recording and for a light aperitif. We take the plane to Singapore.
