Large Man From The Film Troy

The Little Fugitive

Morris Engel, Ruth Orkin and Ray Ashley

"the most beautiful films to show children are not the ones where the filmmaker tries to protect the world, but often those where another child plays the role of buffer , an intermediary, in this exhibition in the world, evil that is part, to the incomprehensible. (...) We like, we can relate to that even when we do not understand more than he did the evil that surrounds it (so we identify with its lack), protects against attacks in the world as they are present in the film, without much to hide. " Alain Bergala (Hypothesis theatrical)

Francois Truffaut movie venerated pre-Elvis, pre-new wave, and when it is viewed, it is understood why. Furious at having to keep his little brother, a teenager simulated with the help of his buddies a fatal accident rifle. Believing he killed his big brother, little flees and wanders for a few days in the middle of Coney Island fairground. Filmed live in the streets of New York, serving the acute affects of childhood sharp (cruelty, grief, loneliness, credulity ...), carried out collectively, Little Fugitive is a hidden treasure of world cinema, the unknown ancestor the 400 Blows, L'Enfance nue or Shadows, a modest but crucial touchstone in the history of modern cinema. A film to see and greet.

Little Fugitive was in his time, the cover of issue 31 of Cahiers du Cinema, a number which, in the writings of Bazin, devoted four pages to the film, but posterity was to win the favor of another text, famous , in which Truffaut attacked the French quality. Which Truffaut, a few years later, explaining that without this small New York film tinkered with camera in hand by two photographers (Morris Engel had covered the Normandy invasion) and an author of children's books, or The 400 Blows or In Breathless would probably born. So as a milestone in the mythology of the Young Turks, and, even more, link Missing from the history of modernity (equidistant from neorealism and early films of New Wave) that The Little Fugitive is seen pulling, by Carlotta, cinematic limbo where he slept until now. For this reason, and without quite the masterpiece which could be dreaming its rarity, the film proves to be doubly exciting.

formally endorsed it, seven years before Breathless, the modern time as a field of possibilities discovered by a surge technique: the origin of the bill's documentary film (pictures stolen in the heart of the crowd on the mode of photojournalism urban - Engel was student Berenice Abbott), there is the invention of a revolutionary little camera, a 35mm compact camera carelessly Engel and a friend who was going to fantasize Godard to the point that it sent Raoul Coutard in New York to study gear closely, and even tried to acquire it. But, more importantly perhaps, is his story that never stops turning back to modern. A child wanders: what would be the pitch, and it is above all a responsible proposal echoes, upstream (eg, Germany Year Zero) and downstream (of course, The 400 Blows). Joey, typical American kid from Brooklyn (Converse and Colt plastic) is entrusted to his elder brother while the mother goes to the bedside of their sick grandmother. The older he then plays a cruel trick, feigning injury that will force the rifle to take her little legs around his neck and fled in the direction of Coney Island, where he spent the weekend alone, wandering between the beach and rides.

The first part, in Brooklyn, is very beautiful, and announced a whole section of realism in New York, Shirley Clarke Cassavetes. But it is obviously wandering Joey among the attractions of Coney Island that is the heart of the film. If the child is a character-key movies modern, is that Deleuze explained about De Sica, and Truffaut, "in the adult world, the child has some motor weakness, but that makes it more capable to see and hear" . That is exactly what is at stake in this story of learning where the adult world is reduced, in the eyes of the boy, the size of a carnival: a moment of pure wandering, both enchanted ( delivered to himself, the kid put their heart's content) and anxiety, when the world is both experience and performance, and gives each image in the sweet smells of candy floss, as a first . Jerome
Momcilovic

A milestone in the history of modern cinema
addition to its subject and the exceptional courage of the young Richie Andrusco, which also holds the attention in The Little Fugitive, it's definitely quality Film treatment, quality is expressed by a great formal simplicity and ease of filming surprising for the time. In fact, filmed in a small team with a small camera that prevents the remark that really, the viewer is embedded in the system put in place included in the maelstrom of a city and his party appears without obviously artificial dimension of the set. And printing sample the fruits of the New Wave, before being, is not trivial.

Indeed, after the director of The Last Metro, which stated that without The Little Fugitive, there would have been neither The 400 Blows or Breathless, we must recognize this film a clear historical importance in History of cinema. Thus, as has been able to write Alain Bergala, the film of Morris Engel, Ruth Orkin and Ray Ashley imposes inspiration biographical referred naturalist and enchantment about it, while dealing with his scamp of a hero, a character so endearing carefree and mocking. Proving determining fact for François Truffaut, The Little Fugitive was at least as much as Jean-Luc Godard opens a cinema freed from traditional constraints and driven by a freedom and an incredible passion while filming. Therefore, one of the manifestos of the New Wave is not far and it will not chance to lead the Helvetic filmmaker looking to buy a few years later the prototype was used in the film but rather the memory embedded and clear viewing of which left its mark.

Similarly, economy of means of production and which Little Fugitive is proof, not unlike the best independent films of the era. Thus, before the films of John Cassavetes and penniless in the continuity of neorealism, this superb film is characterized by an original method of financing (underwriting) and the intense involvement of each of its members, well beyond the current job only constraints . Therefore, do not consider The Little Fugitive as one of the landmarks of Western cinema in the second half of the twentieth century is all the more regrettable that this film was rewarded also by a Silver Lion in Venice this year its release and chose the venerable Library U.S. Congress, as a work to be preserved because of its cultural, historical and aesthetic.

In short, memorable and remarkable film from every point of view, The Little Fugitive is one that you mark and leave a trace in you forever. Moreover, if the extraordinary advance of its freedom and its deep processing are matched only fair paint America at the time, it does not relieve least one of the most sensitive and stories touching the cinema then was able to shoot and to see ... Program:
- Singapore flight - Calcutta

Yohann and I arrived in Calcutta on Saturday night after about 22h 4:30 flight from Singapore. An hour later we reach the city center took a taxi from the counter government "pre-paid taxis" (230 PIR), which seems strangely cheaper than taxis taken on the sly. The Sunflower
guesthouse that we selected is full, we take a room at the Super Guesthouse (900 IRP for a double). Located in a rather touristy, the guesthouse is rather a misnomer. Clean in appearance, she hosts a small colony of cockroaches ... something to be immediately in the mood of the trip. A little quick tour of the neighborhood brings us to the New Market which houses a small concert in the street. We bought two bottles of water, especially for brushing teeth and it's bedtime.

Program:
- visit Victoria Memorial
- Vol Calcutta - Bagdogra
- Taxi Bagdogra - Darjeeling

visit to Calcutta is not the purpose of the trip but we decide to go to the Victoria Memorial , I had occasion to visit two years ago and which I think is the most beautiful monument in Calcutta. After a short morning walk which allowed me to harassed by moms who want to buy their babies milk, we take breakfast at the Zurich restaurant recommended by Lonely Planet. IRP for 125 we are entitled to 2 orange juice, 1 tea, 1 coffee and 2 banana pancakes. Orange juice seems questionable, milk in coffee and pancakes also consists of raw bananas cut inside the pancake. I do not want to seem tough, but I've seen better as breakfast.

We then take a taxi to the Victoria Memorial. Our flight was at 14:20, we are negotiating with the taxi a short visit a few sights (580 PIR). The first will be the Victoria Memorial , an imposing white building in the heart of a peaceful park, and then slice with the city of Calcutta. The interior of the building contains a museum rather boring, but the building itself, particularly admired since the end of the lake is well worth the 150 PIR required for entry (10 IRP for the premises, or 15 times less!) .

We take our taxi and go through the New Bridge, Howrah Bridge and the District Exchange suburb of Calcutta before reaching the airport. Our plane is delayed Kingfisher from 14:20 to 15h. We enjoy lunch on the 1st floor of the restaurant very pleasant domestic terminal. Little chicken tika masala (among other things) in front of tennis and we are doing for the most expensive meal of our trip (1324 IRP). Our flight does depart from 14:20 to 16h and finally we do not even be traveling on an Airbus aircraft but on Kingfisher Air Deccan ...

arrived at 17.10 at the airport in Bagdogra, we take a Pre-paid taxi to Darjeeling (1180 IRP for a car, 3900 jeep IRP). 3900 IRP is far too overpriced, we will make the 4 hour drive in a small pot of yoghurt . The option I recommend is to pay 1700-1800Rp a driver out for a Toyota car. The distance is only 85km, but the road is rugged and highly sinuous, a car a little more comfortable would have been refused.

We arrive in Darjeeling on a small square. It seems that the little car could not climb the side that would connect us to the Hotel Food Lonely Planet recommends. Someone suggested we take a jeep for 100 PIR. Tired, we accept. We talk with our driver, Abodh Rai, and we realize that it has his own travel agency on the square. It seems a bit (even many) tipsy, and had to cut short its whiff of alcohol, one promises to resume our discussion of trekking the next morning. We take a room with two beds (300 PIR). It's clean but it is very cold. Despite the down and the coverage provided, use a good sleeping bag is highly recommended. Then we climb to the third floor to take our dinner: a thali (flat Nepal) and Tibetan bread. The shower has hot water between 18.30 and 19.30. It is too late and we are asking for buckets of hot water (10 PIR).

Program:
- negotiation
trekking - visit Darjeeling

woke up almost every hour, I have no trouble getting out of bed at 7:30. After scrambled eggs, we go back Abodh to talk about our destination: the Singalila Ridge Trek. Abodh is very nice but he talks a lot .. too. Sometimes unclear, things get complicated when he grabbed a sheet of paper to try to clarify his remarks. However we decide to trust him and arrange a 4 days trekking. We need two more days to make the journey in the world, but failing, we'll go up and rejoin Sandakphu Rimbik directly without going through Phalut. The 1000 IRP per person per day covers all transportation to Mana Bhanjang, guide, housing, water and food along the route and return to the "shared taxis" since Rimbik. We take no porter. If you go up Phalut, it should cost more because Phalut non guesthouse, then we should take a tent to spend the night. Abodh advises us not to take with us because everything will be provided. He pays the first PIR 5.000, the 3000 will be remaining Payable to our return.

We start trekking tomorrow morning, so we decided to visit Darjeeling now. On Monday 26 January is the Day Republican and therefore gives rise to a big parade on the village square. Dances of military and children keep coming so much to the delight of thousands of villagers from the village of 190,000 inhabitants.

Some souvenir shops are closed, so we walk in the mountains in search of Buthiers Busty Gompa , one of the most scenic monasteries Darjeeling by Lonely Planet. The weather was foggy a lot, we do not see the view. The monastery is it rather nice and well maintained.

Given the fog surrounding us back to the guesthouse for a nap until 16h. A German-style breakfast (fried potatoes / fried egg) and we go back downtown. Short Walk in the few shops open and then we head to the Big Bazaar, a great local supermarket. We try to see the screening of Slumdog Millionaire is in Hindi but without subtitles ... this would damage could be an experiment. We therefore returned to the guesthouse at 18:30 to enjoy the hot shower. Digestive problems start for me, I take a light dinner.

Program
- Darjeeling Trip - Bhanjang
Mana - Mana Bhanjang Trekking (2130m) - Tumling (2970m) 11km =

Sunrise 6:30 am. Breakfast. Abodh the car picks us up at 7:30. It goes to his headquarters in the place where we expect his brother "Decon" over a cup of tea. We then went to Mana Bhanjang (1h drive). Reached the village, there recovers our guide, Punba. Then we wait at the registration desk that two young Israeli couples to register eventually. A cup of tea (yes again, we had to drink 2 liters a day) and we begin the trek at 10am.

The trek program is represented by this photograph.

The first 2.5km is rather harsh . We walk on a paved road winding sometimes taking a few shortcuts, but that adds to the difficulty. Following the advice of Abodh I take a spare set of business while Yohan takes all his backpack. As he is sicker than me, so I will carry the bag the first day.

We see then white mountains for the first time.

We then stop at Sherpa Tea Stall around 12:30 for lunch. We'll savor a very good soup with egg noodles. At the end of lunch we are joined by a pair of German then followed by the Israeli group meetings previously.

We will start again and arrive at 2:30 later village Tumling the price of a grueling last mile. The guesthouse is very nice. It lies in a small bungalow with two beds, a bathroom with real toilets (not Turkish). The whole is surprisingly very clean.

We then walk a few meters to a small plateau where we have a nice view of the mountains. It is fun to note that the village is split into halves lengthwise. A marker is left Nepal, India is right. No border, the Indians are welcome to Nepal and vice versa.
It then returns to the main building the guesthouse to get around the fire. We take tea with the guides while the women are busy with fire and preparing the dinner. The Israelis arrive about two hours after us while the German couple decide to continue walking for less walking the next.

At dinner, at the insistence of the guide, try the Tonga, a sort of local beer. It is fermented herbs that have between 6 months and 3 years. It adds hot water and drink through a straw. We can add 6 times with hot water whenever the beer becomes stronger.

Before bed, recovering a hot water bottle that will not be too far in my sleeping bag stayed in Darjeeling on the advice of Abodh .. I only protection for a sleeping bag and a blanket that do unfortunately not hot enough, while Yohann sleeps peacefully in his sleeping bag.

Program:
- Tumling (2970m) - Sandakphu (3636m) 19km =

The hot water bottle did not take long with the surrounding cold. So as usual I count the hours during the night. It is therefore happy to welcome the awakening by our guide at 5:15 to go watch the sunrise. Starting on the left of the guesthouse, then right panel "welcome to Nepal, it is 10 minutes' walk brings us to the top of a small hill.

right the sun rises on the plain.

left the mountains are colored pink.

no longer works, the cold quickly becomes gripping and around 7am we decided to go have breakfast guesthouse. We finished near the kitchen fire, sipping tea with our umpteenth pretzels houses and porridge oats.

We will start again around 8 am, taking the path to the bedroom the sun, then back and forth before the two chains of mountains.

The beginning of the trek is fairly quiet: 4km course in which we cross the gates of Singalila National Park.

2km This then brings us down to a Nepalese village .

The first challenge comes with these 3km of winding road.

Once completed, it is almost noon and stomachs how to growl. The guide, all smiles, we present our destination for lunch. These are blue houses that we saw in the distance. Note that the white house at the top of the mountain is the final destination of this day, the village of Sandakphu.

A good hour's walk and here we are now in this small village which takes its name from this "wonderful" small lake (whose name I forget). The paperwork filed in the guardhouse, and here we are seated in the guesthouse for a new bowl of noodles with egg.

As shown in this photo , we have now 6km plate followed by 3km of steep slope.

Finding the guide and Yohann walk too slowly), I climb alone with happiness and admires the view from Sandakphu . This is exactly why we went that far.

Once again it must register with the guard house and we go through the village in search of new photos to do. We then take our neighborhoods in the big blue house. Yohann not slow to recover from the fire while I go to watch the sunset.

A small path behind the village allows me to see off the second mountain range, which contains Mount Everest (8848m).

however I focus on the main mountain range which stands just outside the village, with Kanchandzonga (8598m) in the middle.

Our friends Israelis are just joining us. Following a physical failure of their girlfriends, they joined a village and are doing take a jeep up Sandakphu. It is important to note that it is possible to come up here by car, but it must start using the same path as the go because it is not possible to join or not Phalut Rimbik in car. One of them is also taken vomiting. Just as the German who brought us our stocks of aspirin and paracetamol.

Program:
- Sandakphu (3636m) - Rimbik (2290m) 22km =

guides we had to wake up at 5.30am. At 5:50, no sound no picture. Yohann and I go out of the house plunged into darkness and silence to watch the sunrise. The sun is not up yet. A sea of clouds seems sweep over the valley.

The sun begins to appear and the mountain range blushed again.

We return to the guesthouse for a new breakfast porridge-the-egg. I tell myself while I will not do 15 days of trek by eating the same thing every meal .. but we're not there, we attack today, the last real day trek of the stay.
parties at 8 am, we return to the guardhouse for Sandakphu mean we left. The first 11 km's rather difficult. Down stairs has never been my cup of tea, especially after 2km, the mountain is now only barely visible, the view being constantly obstructed by vegetation. We descend into the valley with the line of sight of a village where one escapes white smoke and some tea plantations.

We arrived at 11:30 am in the restaurant, rather proud of the sustained pace that we have imposed. Having so far not very hungry, and wishing to break with our traditional pasta with egg, we order momos (Asian equivalent of dim sum). The rule is generally momos: 1 hour preparation, 5 minutes of tasting. This breakfast is no exception to the rule and is therefore after a long pause as we leave for the last 11 kilometers.

Continuing down a bit, we stop very quickly in another guesthouse to take a little hot tea. It then continues 4.5km climb followed 6.5km plate before reaching Rimbik.

is through the village, stopping every 50 meters to take pictures of children. We moved to the hotel Su-Khim that looks at first sight to a disused hotel. The entrance and ground floor are devoid of furniture. We're getting the floor to find our room with a double bed, a table and a mirror. Communal toilets also have a rather sleek style. We take our tea on the terrace before getting tackled by the two girls 9 and 10 years of ownership. Speaking English remarkably well, they are keen on badminton and Yohann eventually completing his legs against them.

We will then below to register with a sort of town hall where we stop the military playing cricket in the garden. And then I start looking to buy a t-shirt and a pair of socks, my clothes are somewhat proven by the last two days of trekking. With my new purchase, I returned to the guesthouse order a bucket of hot water to end three days without washing. Full happiness. Roti prata dinner in the dining room, also rather basic.

Program:
- Rimbik trip - Darjeeling
- Visit the zoo in Darjeeling

The guide we had to wake up at 5.30am so we took a jeep group (10 people) 6:30. He wakes up at 6:10 ET so we lack the taxi and he tells us to expect that the next from 11am. Asking him to go into town to confirm our tickets, he returned 20 minutes later saying that it has found a jeep to take us. We will be 5 in the car and we will cost 1.600 PIT (included in package). So we start around 8 am and do the 4 hour road unhindered.

Back in Darjeeling, we go back Abodh. It is in discussion with several groups of trekkers, we therefore decided to take our Sherpa to lunch in the restaurant opposite. We did try to Tibetan tea (tea + milk + butter + salt) that I hasten not to finish. Then returned to see Abodh to organize the day tomorrow: Tiger Hill and return flight to Bagdogra airport. We said goodbye to our Sherpa, while leaving a small tip to thank him (500 PIR).

We will then visit the zoo in Darjeeling. Small, especially impressed by the zoo species are present: black bear himalyen , red panda, snow leopard, yak, ... One of the best zoos I have ever visited.

Then we'll burn our photos onto a DVD for Abodh leave and start our shopping. In Tibet arts shop, we spend more than 10,000 for the purchase of IRP pacheminas, head of Buddha and object of prayer (Manet). It is extremely difficult to negotiate the Northern Indians. You leave with a poor 7% discount and return to the hotel where I retrieves Feed my backpack. A small sitting Internet, a hearty dinner and we spend our last night in Darjeeling.

Saturday 31st January 2009

Program:
-
Tiger Hill - Darjeeling Trekking around
- trajaet Darjeeling - Bagdogra
- Flights Bagdogra - Calcutta and Calcutta - Singapore

Abodh do we call if the weather was clear. 5h, the phone rings ... damn we do so based in Singapore. The time to prepare and we are on our way to Tiger Hill to admire once more the sunrise over the mountains. A half-hour drive later and we buy tickets to the 3rd floor of the building (40 per person + 10 PIT PIT for the car). The best view would be in effect from the building.

We arrive in what looks like a screening room. The seats are turned to windows, we wait quietly sunrise. Once appears, open the windows and start shooting. On the right the sun rises over the clouds, on the left we see a mountain range . The Lonely Planet describes the rising of the sun "Truly spectacular." Or we had no chance, or the book hangs completely. The view from Sandakphu is 50 times more beautiful than that of Tiger Hill, where the mountains are too far. It remains a beautiful sight for those who have not had the chance to trek to the other, I suggest you do something else. Below, people massed on a platform, it does not seem to get a sight worse than ours.

Once sunrise finished Decon (Abodh's brother) takes us walking around Darjeeling. We need to reach the sunken Kuseong since Tiger Hill is 2h30 walking. Before the low interest stage of the march, cut short and we decided to go directly to the Bagdogra airport. We get there at noon when our flight leaves at 16h. We pay the day today (1800 IRP) and the difference for trekking. We discover on billboards for a Kingfisher flight from Kolkata to 12.30 and are therefore trying to take. At the counter, we learned that our flight was canceled 16h, they were unable to join us (my phone no longer worked) and that the 12:30 flight is the only flight of the day. It is too late to take it, but we finally put on a Jet Airways flight.

We therefore do not finally be traveling on the flight that we have Kingfisher yet paid (Air Deccan to go, Jet Airways on return).

The Boeing 747 Jet Airways to share 14h, just in time for lunch at the cafeteria upstairs. Arrived at the domestic airport in Calcutta, we reach walk the international terminal located right outside the domestic terminal. Having spent all our money, we will not go back downtown and spend two hours on the front seats to be open the doors of the lounge where we will wait patiently for the flight to take us back to Singapore.
