Program:
- Singapore flight -
Jakarta - Jakarta route - Carita
On the occasion of Easter Friday, we are therefore Road to the Krakatau (Krakatoa or) volcano located between the north-western island of Java and north-eastern Sumatra.
This volcano became famous in 1883 by enrolling in the ranking of the largest eruptions ever known. The eruption of August 27, 1883 in brief:
- The noise of the eruption is the most noise stronger than we have ever heard on earth. The noise was perceived by all the world barographs up to 5 days after the explosion, the sound wave that is 7 times around the earth.
- The ashes were thrown at a height of 80 km.
- The official number of deaths is 36.417 either by the explosion or the tsunami that followed.
- The earth's temperature went down by 1.2 degrees Celsius and the weather conditions were changing during the next five years.
is on an Air Asia flight to Jakarta so that we are moving towards this myth. The 40 minutes late taking off and long queues to obtain Indonesian visa (25 USD) and Customs (implementation of a system of taking fingerprints and photo) will not detract from our excitement.
arrived in Jakarta, we are greeted by Diman and its small sign marked Mr Thibaud. Thibaud had indeed passed earlier this week to negotiate prices with him, resulting Rp 8,000,000 for 4, 2 million per person. This price includes car, boat, food, water, tent, .. short while for 3 days and 2 nights (except for the housing Carita). Overall, we can say that a trip to Krakatau is not given especially for the region. Only 7-8 and 7-8 guides boats share the market so it takes a bit to get their hands in their pockets.
It is almost midnight when we get into the car and its driver Diman.
Friday, April 2
Program:
- Boat Carita - Rakata Island
- Short trek to the volcano Krakatau
- Fishing
A little over 3 hour drive later and we arrive at Carita small fishing port. It was 3:30 when we ask a room of Rakata Guesthouse. We get up at 8.30am for breakfast which is included in the room. Nasi goreng first stay.
We then pay 50% to Diman as deposit and take the boat to the island of Rakata. After an hour of crossing, we arrive at Diman with Rakata, his cook, the captain and two shipmates. We moor the boat to a sandy beach slightly gray and located 200 meters in front of Krakatau. The view is unobstructed, the sun shines. It arises on the sand staring any positive sign of the Anak Krakatau volcano appeared again in 1927 because the main volcano was destroyed by the eruption of 1883. It seems that yesterday, the volcano has produced 6 eruptions of smoke in the day, we hope at least one during these almost three days on the island.
Come lunch time and we enjoy our nasi goreng in front of the volcano. White smoke coming out of the volcano seems to intensify. While we enjoyed our pineapple, gray smoke comes out of the crater, the volcano erupts .. Cameras in hand, we will not lose a crumb of the large cone of smoke that forms the vertical of the volcano.
After lunch, and despite the weather conditions have greatly deteriorated, we take the boat to the island of Anak Krakatau. On the island, a sign explains that the volcano was completely exploded in 1883 and in 1927 a new volcano emerged from the ocean which now covers the caldera volcano of fire. It then began a march of half an hour on the slope of the volcano to Level 1 of the volcano, a small hill on the right flank of the volcano. Level 2 is the crater itself, whose rise is prohibited and that seems very dangerous anyway, the volcano is very steep and covered with ash and small pebbles.
We take the boat to the island of Rakata. A small swimming and fishing is the session begins. The team has put the shrimp at my disposal, and accountability a good BBQ fish now rests on my shoulders. First pitch. Thibaud while testing the voltage of my line, the path of the cane wobbles. Thibaud is that you? No. I shoe and I can bring the line. A white snaper in just 2 minutes, it starts well. 10 minutes later, a sort of completes the picture Trevally hunting. Thibaud then returns a second white snaper. 3 fish in a little over 30 minutes .. but nothing in the afternoon or evening.
We then dine near the campfire: rice, vegetables, fried calamari, shrimp in chili. The day was long, last night was short, So we go to bed with the chickens. Just lying, torrential rain fell on the island. The tent is leaking.
Saturday, April 3
Program:
- Boat Carita - Rakata Island
- Walk on the island of Anak Krakatau
- Snorkeling at the foot of the volcano
- Fishing
Sunrise 6am. Aching and clothes soaked by rain the night, we leave the tent. Little lull before the rain resumes. A dip in the sea just give us a little heat. Can I resume fishing in the rain. My sacrifice will be rewarded by a small flatfish.
We then return to the island of Krakatau to walk on the right side of the island or some vegetation has been restored since the last eruption of lava, which dates from 2008. We will see some birds walk and quickly became the few macro giant butterflies living on the island.
We take the boat to do some snorkeling at the foot of the lava flow. I learn to my cost a mask and snorkel does not float well and mine lies therefore to 15 meters deep in the ocean. Fortunately it lends me one and therefore I devote myself to a small meeting of underwater photography. The site is not too bad, corals, lots of fish, but unfortunately many of the same fish species. But I see in the distance a bumphead parrotfish. We return
lunch on the beach: rice, vegetables and shrimp. Then it resumed fishing activity, this time with greater professionalism. Having more shrimp, crab is the turn to go on the hook. Diman and I catch crabs and Mathieu are responsible for preventing escapes from the fortress of sand that we have built them. Unfortunately, only a new small fish with teeth well provided, will not offset the losses had undergone countless crab population of the island.
We then dine on the beach including the fish we've caught the last two days, accompanied by the now traditional rice, vegetables, skewered shrimp and chili sauce.
rain again and force us to play AWAY president under a tarpaulin.
